TikTok Shop product image requirements

By Yahya Boudali, founder of Frontpiece. Last updated .

The short answer:

  • You can upload up to 9 product images.
  • Each image must be at least 600 x 600 px.
  • TikTok's Policy describes square images, and its help recommends 1:1. Its bulk-listing help says images between 3:4 and 4:3 should still upload.
  • Files can be JPG, JPEG or PNG, up to 10 MB each.
  • The main image shows the front of the product on a pure white background. TikTok's own textile guide also allows a simple room scene for carpets.
  • The first image carries no added text, graphics or watermarks, and no image may carry marketing or promotion stickers. The Policy's wording on text in other images is broader; see "Where TikTok's pages disagree".

These are the rules on TikTok's US Seller University; we did not check other regions. Every rule links to the page it comes from, with the date printed on that page where it has one. TikTok's Partner API pages print no date. We read all of them on Sep 26, 2026. Where TikTok's own pages disagree, we show each version.

The rules at a glance

Where TikTok's pages disagree

File size: 10 MB or 5 MB. The current Seller Center page and the API say 10 MB. An older TikTok page from 2024 says 5 MB, which is the figure many guides still repeat.

Minimum size: at least 600 px, or more than 600 px. The Policy says at least 600 x 600. The Listing Quality Guidelines say more than 600 x 600 for the main image.

Our reading: Use more than 600 px on each side to meet both.

Aspect ratio: square, or 3:4 to 4:3.

  • The Policy describes square images and the help recommends 1:1.
  • The bulk-listing help says 3:4 to 4:3 should still upload.
  • Outside that range, the bulk tool adds white borders to make the image square, and the Policy bans added borders.

Our reading: Upload 1:1.

Main image background: pure white, white, or any plain color.

Our reading: The Policy is the binding rule and the most recently dated of these pages, so use a pure white background.

Text: on every image, or on the first image only.

  • The Policy's sentence reads: "All product images must not include any added logos, text, borders, watermarks, or graphics covering the product or in the background." The How to Add Products page also says to avoid added text, graphics and watermarks, with no limit to the first image.
  • The Policy's own checklist, the Listing Quality Guidelines' main-image row, the Product Listing guide and most listing-quality diagnosis codes limit the rule to the first image.
  • Several TikTok pages ask for text on later images:
  • Every page that mentions promo stickers such as "free shipping" bans them on any image.

Our reading: Keep the first image free of added text, and keep promo stickers off every image. On later images, factual text (dimensions, materials, specifications, how to use) is what TikTok's own guides ask for, and it is common on live listings (see "What live listings show"). Keep it off the product itself.

Video: 5 MB or 100 MB. The Policy and the Product Listing guide say 5 MB. Seller Center says 100 MB.

Our reading: A video under 5 MB meets both.

Title length. Optimizing Product Titles (May 14, 2026) says 40 to 150 characters. The Product Listing guide (Aug 10, 2026) and How to Add Products say 25 to 200. The Listing Quality Guidelines say 25 to 255.

How to fill the 9 image slots

Using only TikTok's rules:

  1. Main image.

    • The whole product, front view, on a pure white background.
    • No added text and no collage. Show only what the customer receives.
    • The listing-quality diagnosis flags a main image that cuts the product off or shows it too small.
  2. Images 2 to 9.

    • The Policy says additional images must show the front, back, sides and other details, including accessories.
    • They may also show key features, the product in use, variations, styled scenes, close-ups and size comparisons.
    • No two images from the same angle, and no promo stickers.

    Our reading: Any added text should state facts and stay off the product (see "Where TikTok's pages disagree").

Category rules TikTok states:

  • Food is shown with its packaging (Product Listing guide).
  • Children's swimwear and undergarments are shown flat, with no child models or mannequins (Product Listing Policy).
  • Menswear, womenswear, Muslim fashion, and sports and outdoor ("Good" tier): at least one image with a real person wearing or using the product (Listing Quality Guidelines).
  • Kids', men's and women's fashion ("Good" tier): the main image should not be one base photo with only the color or clothing changed in editing software (Listing Quality Guidelines).
  • Size charts: the Seller Center size-chart page asks for a clear image in the market's language and a structured size chart. The Partner API asks for size-chart images of at least 1024 px on the shorter side.
  • Carpets and mats (Textile & Soft Furnishings guide, Jun 26, 2026): the main image can use "a simple bedroom/living room environment, or a pure white background", with carpets shown laid on the ground.
  • Supplements and food: we found no US page that requires a Supplement Facts or Nutrition Facts image in the gallery. TikTok's safety guides (Aug 20, 2026) say nutrition facts and supplement facts should be "included where applicable", and the category approval asks for label photos. Food is shown with its packaging.

What live listings show

We opened 30 live TikTok Shop US product pages and the top results of several searches on Sep 24, 2026, as a shopper. These counts are what was live that day. They cannot show what TikTok rejected.

  • Text after the first image: We counted the image gallery at the top of each page, variant slides included, and not the images further down in the product description, which on several pages add size charts and spec tables. In those galleries, 114 of the 202 images after the first carried added text or graphics, and 29 of the 30 galleries had at least one. By category: supplements 33 of 45, food 15 of 24, rugs 20 of 36, furniture 19 of 42, apparel 15 of 41 (10 of those 15 carry only a brand logo), electronics 12 of 14.
  • Facts panels: 8 of 8 supplement listings and 4 of 5 food listings showed a Supplement Facts or Nutrition Facts image, as a later image and never as the main image.
  • Main image: 9 of the first 10 results for "area rug" led with a room scene. Apparel results led with white or light studio backgrounds (0 of 10 lifestyle for "t-shirt" and for "leggings").
  • Rule-breaking that stayed live: some best-selling listings carried badges or borders on the main image. That is not a reason to copy them.

AI-generated and AI-edited images

TikTok's seller policy on AI images (Sep 24, 2026) allows AI content "when it accurately represents the real product". Among other things, it bans using AI to:

  • change the product's size, color, material or shape;
  • turn a flat product into fake 3D;
  • add labels or arrows that contradict the real dimensions;
  • inflate a count or bundle;
  • suggest accessories or parts that are not included;
  • replace the product as the main subject;
  • show one variant's image for another.

The same seller page does not ask you to label AI images. TikTok's creator AI page (Sep 2, 2026) says TikTok may add an "AI-generated" label based on file metadata. It does not say whether that applies to product listing images.

The Product Listing Policy also bans digital renderings of a product.

The listing-quality diagnosis flags a fake model in the first image. Its fix reads: "Use real people or animals to showcase your product."

TikTok's own tools edit product images. Seller Center offers "AI Optimize" to change a background, and its built-in image editor can remove backgrounds.

Our reading:

  • An image made from photos of the real product fits the wording of the seller AI policy, as long as it breaks none of the bans above.
  • A product drawn from nothing by AI is a rendering.
  • The TikTok pages we read do not draw this line themselves.
  • Frontpiece makes images from sellers' photos, so read this as our view.

If the same images go to Google Shopping: Google Merchant Center says AI-generated product images must carry a tag inside the file that marks them as AI-made (IPTC DigitalSourceType "TrainedAlgorithmicMedia"), and that you should not remove it. Merchant Center also lists a "CompositeSynthetic" code and does not say which code fits a real product photo placed in an AI-made scene.

Questions

What size should TikTok Shop product images be?

At least 600 x 600 px (Product Listing Policy); more than 600 px on each side meets every TikTok page. TikTok's Partner API caps gallery images at 4000 x 4000 px.

What aspect ratio does TikTok Shop use?

Square. TikTok's Policy describes square images and its help recommends 1:1. Its bulk-listing help says images between 3:4 and 4:3 should still upload; outside that range the bulk tool adds white borders to make the image square.

How many images can a TikTok Shop listing have?

Up to 9, and at least 1. TikTok's "Good" listing-quality tier asks for 5 or more.

Can TikTok Shop product images have text?

Not the first image: TikTok's checklist says to add no text, graphics or watermarks to it, and no image may carry promo stickers. For later images, the Policy bans added text "covering the product or in the background", while TikTok's own guides ask for text on specification and dimension images. On Sep 24, 2026, most live listings we opened carried text on later images.

What is the maximum file size?

10 MB per image, on the current Seller Center page and in the API. An older 2024 TikTok page says 5 MB. For the video, the Policy says 5 MB and Seller Center says 100 MB, so a video under 5 MB meets both.

Does the main image need a white background?

The Product Listing Policy says the main image must have a pure white background. TikTok's textile guide also allows a simple room scene for carpets, and most top rug listings use one.

Can I use AI images on TikTok Shop?

TikTok's seller AI policy allows them when they accurately represent the real product. It bans changing the product's size, color, material or shape, inflating a count or bundle, and other ways of misrepresenting the product. The Product Listing Policy also bans digital renderings.

What Frontpiece makes for TikTok Shop

Frontpiece (frontpiece.ai) turns a seller's own product photos into listing images and copy for Amazon, Walmart, Etsy, TikTok Shop and Shopify. For TikTok Shop, a kit has:

  • A full gallery of images, up to 9 of them for TikTok Shop, TikTok's limit.
  • A white-background main image of your product. Rugs, carpets, mats and furniture can lead with a room scene instead, with the white version as image 2.
  • A main image with no added text, no added logos on any TikTok Shop image, and every image built to leave out promo stickers, badges and discount claims.
  • Later images can carry factual callouts such as dimensions or materials, like the ones TikTok's guides describe.
  • 2048 x 2048 px square images: above TikTok's 600 px minimum and under the 4000 px cap in TikTok's API.
  • The original JPEG files, about 1 MB each, as the default bulk download. You can also download PNG or WebP. Seller Center takes JPG and PNG, not WebP.
  • A tag inside every image file that marks it as AI-made (IPTC TrainedAlgorithmicMedia), kept in PNG, JPG and WebP downloads. Editing the file in another tool can remove it.
  • A title written to 40 to 150 characters, the range in TikTok's "Optimizing Product Titles" guide. Other TikTok pages give 25 to 200 or 25 to 255.
